What's Going On . . .
While we may not buzz with the activity level of a megachurch, we rarely seem to get bored living in a community with one another.  See what we've been up to lately. . .

Kid's Camp 2008

In the heat of a humid Georgia summer, in July of 2008, we had our first Kids Camp week. Our church families have been blessed with many children, and we wanted to share with them the Lord’s love and the insights that He was giving us as a body about how He sustains us. As a church, we were experiencing together the gospel of John, looking for ways the Lord is our life, our light, our food and our drink, and so much more. With the children, we explored five of these aspects of how Jesus sustains us. We divided the children into two groups: the little kids, those five and under, and the big kids, those older than five.

We started the mornings with singing, worshipping together as one group. One of our desires was to help the children learn some of the songs that we sing in our corporate meetings so that they would be able to enter into these meetings with us more fully. So, each day we taught a new song from our songbook, as well as singing some all-time kids’ favorites. By the end of the week, the kids had adopted a new favorite song, which can still be heard in choruses (with great gusto!) throughout the neighborhood when the kids get together . . .

"To Jesus every day I find my heart is closer drawn
You’re fairer than the sons of men, and fresher than the morn.
You’re all that I can say of You and infinitely more.
And every day You’re dearer than You were the day before . . . "

After the worship time, the younger group focused on tangible elements of God’s sustenance, for example how the Lord Jesus provides our families to take care of us. The older group centered on both physical and spiritual understandings of the provisions of Jesus to meet our needs for acceptance and for love, and ultimately, our need to know Him! Highlights from this teaching time included visits from the Woman at the Well and Nicodemus! Of course, Kids Camp would not be complete without crafts, games, and snacks!

As we had hoped, the week was a wonderful success in terms of bringing the children together, giving them a taste of the Lord, and allowing them to share their unique expressions of Jesus with one another. At the end of the week the children drew pictures of things they had learned. These pictures were put together to create a quilt-flag that helped them to share about their experiences with the rest of the church in the regular meeting that Saturday. We received an additional blessing in that the adults who helped with the camp enjoyed being with one another for so much of the week and got to experience the Lord together through our children. We are continually seeking to incorporate our children into the life of the church and to understand new ways to experience the Lord together in this body that is blessed with so many young people. May the Lord continue to sustain us!
